Mr. Escobedo and the Friends of the Band officers run each meeting.

You can also view a list of Parent Meetings dates, by month, on the Event Schedule page.

Band Parent Meeting - September 14, 2009

Band Director Report

Mr. E. began by showing a video of a performance by Michael Buble featuring Jumainy Smith on trumpet--former Eckstein/Roosevelt student. He also announced the Presidents Own Marine Band concert at Meany Hall with former student Harry Ong on clarinet (concert is free on October 4th). He then thanked the parents for all of the lab fee donations and stated, “The Arts are happening in this community because of you.”

Co-presidents. Mr. E. introduced Heather Lisagor as co-president and on the spot volunteer as her co-president Sandy Gurkewitz.

Our new piano on its way! Mr. E said the new piano is fabulous and will serve the Eckstein community well. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the effort to get a wonderful piano for the Band, Orchestra, Musical and Eckstein community to use – Eckstein Band parents, Eckstein parents through the Annual Campaign, a very generous anonymous donor, and the Eckstein Orchestra parents. Mr. E expects the piano to be delivered to the school soon.

E-group. Please join for up to date information about upcoming events. Sign up for our e-mail list by visiting: http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/FriendsOfEcksteinBand/.

Smart Music. Students in band and vocal jazz will be using a computer program called Smart Music to record progress throughout the year.

Introducing Mr. Trader. Marcus Trader will be teaching two choir classes, Beginning Band, one Jr. Band class, and a piano class. If you have any questions please feel free to email Mr. Trader. (Course curriculum sheets were available at the meeting.)

Calendar. Be sure to check the Event Schedule page on the Band website for the latest information about band events.

Concert Dress

Boys-- A winged-collar tuxedo shirt, black slacks, black socks, black shoes, and black bow-tie. (James Bond without a jacket.)

Girls— Black v-neck 3/4 length shirt (no midriff showing), below the knee black skirt or black pants, and black shoes—flats please, no heals particularly for traveling.

Parent Meetings. Generally the first Monday of every month. Usually a quick 15 or 20 minute nuts and bolt meeting for all parents and then break outs into committee meetings. Please confirm the date for the next band meeting on the Home Page at or the Event Schedule page.

Jr. Jazz. Starts tomorrow September 15th. Will run Tuesday and Thursdays for the remainder of the school year. Students can participate even if they cannot make practices on both days. 7th and 8th grade students are also welcome. This is an award winning group!

Band Room Mail Box. Please have your student place all permission forms and money in the locked mail box just inside the band room next to the piano. Please do not give Mr. E any permission forms or money.

Question on 7th grade groups: Intermediate jazz band (Group C) is part of and performs with the Intermediate Concert Band. They also perform as a separate group.

Please note the mistake in the parent information packet that went home at the beginning of the school year—delete group H (bottom of calendar)

Friends of Band Report

Introduction to FOB by co-chair Heather Lisagor. Our reason for existing is to support the excellent band program that Mr. E and Mr. Trader are implementing at Eckstein. We provide fundraising and organize trips and festivals. Please sign up for the email list to keep in touch with what is going on.

Introduction of FOB officers:
Co-chairs--Heather Lisagor and Sandy Gurkewitz
Co-treasurers—Sam McCracken and Karen Hutchison
Co-secretary—Lea Roberts. We are looking for another secretary to help with the meeting minutes.
Webmaster—Kathy Briggs
E-group—Jen Eisner

End of Meeting

A private percussion instructor gave a short presentation and handed out flyers. He also instructs in music and jazz theory.

Private Instrument Lessons. If you’re interested in paid private instrument lessons for your child during or after school, instructors post information about their services in the band room hallway. These are independent instructors who are not associated with the Eckstein staff. Students leave their band class once a week to take lessons in one of the private lesson rooms in the band room area. There are also group lessons for the endangered instruments provided by the Seattle Youth Symphony to encourage students to play instruments like bassoon, oboe, trombone, tuba, and French horn.

Volunteers. Sign up sheets were available after the band meeting for various volunteer positions. If you’re interested in volunteering, please look at the Volunteer Opportunities to see what committee positions are open or if there’s a committee chair you want to contact to volunteer to help. We always need help with baked good at the concert. This is an easy and terrific way to help generate funds for the band.

Last Reminder. Come to the band meetings for the clothing exchange. Please bring gently used concert attire and/or take what your student needs. Also, the Tux Shop by Northgate offers discounts for tux shirts and bow ties.

Band Directors Report

Former Student Returns. Harry Ong who plays with President Obama’s band came to visit and played with his woodwind quartet for the Wind Ensemble.

Community Sharing. Mr. E is going to teach at View Ridge Elementary every Wednesday for approximately half an hour.

Many Thanks. Thank you for your donations. They allow us to buy things like chairs, stands, music, instruments, instrument repairs, etc. We purchased all of the chairs and stands in the band room with parent contributions when the other chairs were almost falling apart. The band also purchases extra instruments that are difficult for students to transport back and forth to school such as tubas so that students have an instrument at school and one at home to practice. Mr. E. will buy enough used instruments in good condition so that every band has enough instruments to cover the needs of the band.

Homeroom Music. Mr. E will be pulling Jr. Band for practicing during some of the extended 50 minute homeroom periods. Other groups can also practice at this time.

Sr. Jazz Gigs. The band will be playing some private gigs this year. They play for free but are usually given a nice donation for each gig which helps with the operations and trip costs each year. The Swing Dance in November is the first gig and there will possibly be another in January.

Gear. All the students should be pretty well set with all the gear they need for band. Concert dress is: Boys – White tuxedo shirt, black pants, socks & shoes, black bow tie. Girls – Black shirt ¾ sleeve, black skirt to right above knees, black flats. Please remember to bring gently worn clothes and shoes that no longer fit your child to the band room for others to use. If you’re in need of a shirt, pants, ties, tops, etc., check out the free clothing at each band meeting.

Grants? Please let Mr. E. know if you are aware of any grant opportunities. He has applied for some small grants already.
