Eckstein Glossary

Here are some terms and TLAs (three letter acronyms) and their definitions you may hear around Eckstein.

504

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (“Section 504″) is a Federal civil rights law that is designed to eliminate disability discrimination in programs and activities that receive Federal funds.

Annual Fund

The Annual Fund is the primary school-wide fundraiser and is devoted to enhancing academics for all students, with a focus on curriculum and building needs.  Recent projects funded through the Annual Fund include library books and on-line research tools, science and art supplies, band/orchestra instruments and repairs, and auditorium improvements.

ASB

Associated Student Body .

BLT

Building Leadership Team.  The BLT is comprised of teachers, staff, administration, and a parent representative.  They are responsible for Professional Development, the school budget, and the school improvement plan.

CBA

Classroom Based Assessments.  The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) has developed standardized assessments to gauge student understanding of the state’s learning standards in Social Studies, The Arts, and Health and Fitness.  The assessments are given by teachers in the classroom throughout the school year.  More information and links to the assessments can be found on this page.

CLC

Community Learning Center,  in-school and after school programs conducted in conjunction with Seattle Parks and Recreation and the YMCA.  More information.

C-SIP

Continuous School Improvement Plan.  A two year plan for improving Eckstein.  It identifies the areas our school plans to focus on in the coming school year, the performance goals we want our students to achieve, and how we are going to collaboratively meet them.  The 09-11 plan is here (pdf).

IEP

Individualized Education Program.

MSP

Measurements of Student Progress.  A standardized test given three times a year to gauge student progress in reading (grades 6, 7, 8), math (6, 7, 8),  writing (7), and science (8).  More information.

Response to Intervention.

WASL

Washington Assessment of Student Learning.  This annual standardized test has been replaced with the High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE) at the high school level and with the Measurements of Students Progress (MSP) for grades 3-8.  More information.  See MSP.
