New Science Initiative at Eckstein

This year, we have an exciting opportunity to help further the excellent science education students receive at Eckstein. Today, Eckstein students share small quantities of computer instruments and manually compare and contrast results.  With the purchase of a portable science computer lab, science classes will be more dynamic and interactive, allowing students to spend more time learning and exploring scientific concepts in a more “real world” environment.

Benefits of Portable Science Computer Lab

  • Teams of two students can measure real world data such as temperature, pressure, and acceleration, making more experiments possible
  • Data can be combined quickly and effectively and displayed on an overhead projector, allowing more quality classroom time for discussion of results and scientific concepts
  • Computers can access online tutorials and allow teachers and students to create animations and video, reinforcing scientific concepts
  • The new technology can be incorporated immediately into existing curriculum

Components of Science Technology Initiative

  • 16 PC laptops on cart to be used by all Eckstein science classes; laptops will be connected to existing classroom “presentation” computers
  • 8 sets of scientific probeware to be shared among the 16 laptops
  • In-school training for Eckstein science teachers

Estimated Cost of Science Technology Initiative

  • $35,000
  • Goal: Begin implementing lab in the 2010-11 school year with full implementation in the 2011-12 school year
  • The Annual Campaign is pursuing grants to supplement family donations for the Science Technology Initiative
