Dear Eckstein Middle School families:
I am writing to let you know about an incident that occurred at school, and to assure you that we have taken appropriate action. Student health and safety is of utmost importance at Eckstein, and I appreciate all the many ways in which students, staff and families work together to create a safe and welcoming environment.
Earlier this month, we learned of an incident of alleged cyber-bullying involving two of our students. Seattle Public Schools has a strong anti-bullying policy, which includes cyber-bullying, so once we learned of this situation we notified police, who are continuing their investigation into this incident. We also took disciplinary action against the student who initiated this activity, although due to student privacy concerns, we don’t discuss the details of those actions.
Please be assured that we have bullying prevention-intervention programs in place at Eckstein, and we will continue to educate students and parents about this important topic. In fact, we have on our schedule the following classes taught by Detective Stephanie Thomas from the Seattle Police Department for students and families:
- For students only – Thursday, March 31 during study hall.
- For Eckstein students and families – Tuesday, April 5 from 7:oo PM to 8:30 PM in the Eckstein Auditorium.
Again, I want to assure you that we do many things here at Eckstein to help ensure a safe and appropriate environment so that students and staff can focus on learning and teaching. I appreciate that you all contribute to making Eckstein a wonderful school community.
If you want to discuss this matter, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Our office phone number is 206-252-5010.
Best wishes,
Kim Whitworth, Principal
