MEET THE COUNSELORS

Larry Christensen MSW

School Counselor

I’m a fourth generation native of Seattle. My great-grandfather settled in Seattle in the late 1800’s in Ballard, worked in the lumber mills there and raised his family.  I never met my grandfather, who died of a heart attack just days before my father was going to play in Rose Bowl for the WWII era Huskies.  After service in the Marine Corp, my father began his career as high school teacher and football coach and soon married my mom in Concrete WA.   I came along and we soon moved to Mercer Island where I spent most of my growing up years.  It was in middle school I became interested in volunteering with disabled children and I started looking at careers where I could pursue this vocation.  At age 16, I began part-time employment at a residential program for disturbed pre-teen boys and set my sights on eventually getting my Masters in Social Work at the UW.  I continued to work in child focused programs throughout my college years, doing everything from daycare and the ‘Y’ camps to juvenile detention and even working at the Echo Glen, a state institution for juvenile offenders.

After I completed my Masters, I worked for 10 years at a N. Seattle residential treatment program for boys as their Clinical Director.  When budgetary issues closed that program, a friend, who is school counselor in Renton, suggested that his line of work might by a good fit for my skills and experience.   I became credentialed as a school counselor and immediately began working part-time at both TOPS and NOMS alternative schools.   When the sixth grade position at Eckstein opened I was really excited about working at one school with such an outstanding reputation and in my own neighborhood, too.   My years at Eckstein have been basically divided between the 6th and the 8th grades and I have really enjoyed serving kids at both ends of the middle school experience.  Eckstein is very special place.  The kids are terrific and the parents are wonderfully supportive.  It is the sort of environment that makes me want to give them my very best.  I am constantly using all the tools and knowledge I’ve picked up along the way in my career journey and I look forward to each year’s new opportunities to help these great kids.

School Counselor

Born and raised just north of Seattle, I attended Blanchet high school and was very active in both soccer and cross country. While attending Western Washington University, I discovered a passion for Psychology and moved on to Central Washington’s graduate program where I completed a Masters in Science for Counseling Psychology and School Counseling. While continuing to live in Seattle, my first 4 years of professional school counselor work took place at the elementary school level in the Lake Stevens School District. During this time, I had the chance to not just work with K-5 students in a regular education setting, but also support a special program for students with emotional and behavioral issues. Since then I’ve enjoyed working in the Seattle School District as a middle school counselor for a number of years and feel fortunate to be calling Eckstein home. Outside of school, I love a wide variety of music, playing basketball, roller blading, camping, swimming and movies.

Head Counselor

As a former Eckstein Roadrunner (where did Eagles come from?), I’m so happy to be working here in the counseling department.  I am a graduate of Eckstein, Roosevelt and the University of Washington, where I earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a master’s degree in School Counseling- a local Seattle girl.  I live in View Ridge with my husband, David, and our two children, Julia, 5, and Jacob, 3.

I started my career in education teaching 2nd grade.  Although I loved it thoroughly, I realized that part of what made me a good teacher was that I was a good listener.  It was then that I decided to pursue counseling and try out the middle school level.

Middle school is the best!  I started out in the Northshore School District at Northshore Junior High, went to the south end of town at Aki Kurose and loved it there.  When the opportunity to work at my former middle school came up, I jumped at the chance, but again-Eagles?  What?  I’m still a Roadrunner at heart
