Happy December!
In class today students completed their character trading cards and worked on their 5 Themes of Geography collages. The geography vocabulary quiz has been moved to Monday 12/5 due to Reading MAP assessments tomorrow during 1st period. Again, here is the study guide.
Tonight’s homework is reading. For students who did not complete their Character Trading Card, it is homework and due at the start of class tomorrow. There is no additional writing homework.
In LA today, students continued to work on the written portion of their Character Trading Cards. Students need to have a final hand written or typed draft at the start of class tomorrow. If students type at home, the font should be size 12 and the margins should be set at 2.5″ for top and bottom margins and 2.8″ for left and right margins. Students will work on the final character sketch and assembling their trading card in class tomorrow.
There is nightly reading homework, but no additional writing homework (just the character paragraphs).
In Social Studies, students worked with a partner to create posters to show the 5 Themes of Geography (Place, Location, Region, Movement and Human/Environmental Interaction). Today students found visuals to represent the 5 themes. Tomorrow in class students will add captions explaining how the visuals represent each of the 5 themes. This will be one way students will be able to review for the vocabulary quiz on Monday 12/5. Students will need to know the definitions for each of the 5 Themes. Definitions are in students’ researchers notebooks as well as in this pdf.
Today in LA, students began a character trading card planning sheet. Tonight’s homework is to finish the planning sheet (sections 1-5) and draw a rough sketch of their character (art skills not required). This character must be a fictional character that your student creates. Students also have nightly reading homework. There is no additional writing homework tonight.
Today in SS, we continued to explore the 5 Themes of Geography, reviewing “place” and “location” and adding “region” and “movement”. Students will have a vocabulary quiz on Friday. A vocabulary list will be on the blog later this week.
We hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend!
Today in class, students completed a Readers Notebook Check In, had time to update their Readers Notebooks and read their choice novel with a focus on how the author describes the character your student has chosen to follow. When students are reading tonight, they should continue to place sticky notes about their character and how the author writes about that character in preparation for tomorrow’s in class assignment.
Students also have one page of free choice nightly writing due at the start of class tomorrow. Students should not write more than 1 page, as they will be expanding on tonight’s writing for homework tomorrow night.
Today and tomorrow in Social Studies, we’re reviewing the 5 Themes of Geography (Place, Location, Region, Movement and Human/Environmental Interaction). Students will write down the definitions today and tomorrow, create a study guide on Wednesday and have a vocabulary quiz on Thursday 12/1. A vocabulary list will be on the blog by Wednesday.
Today in class students were given revision checklist for the paragraph they wrote about a character they chose to follow in “Star Wars: A New Hope”. Students need to revise their paragraph and bring all note taking sheets, rubrics and drafts to class on Wednesday 11/23. Just as a reminder, paragraphs should include a claim, evidence, an explanation of how the evidence supports the claim and a concluding sentence. Students may use their notes and their archetype paste in from their reader’s notebook to help them with this assignment.
Star Wars Lit Essay Revision Checklist
There will be no additional “free write” homeowork this week, however students do have nightly reading homework.
Just a reminder that there will be a one-hour early dismissal tomorrow, 11/23.
Today in class students were given an directions for writing a paragraph about the character they chose to follow in “Star Wars: A New Hope”. Students need to write or type a paragraph (on a separate sheet of paper) analyzing the character and its archetype. Paragraphs should include a claim, evidence, an explanation of how the evidence supports the claim and a concluding sentence. Students may use their notes and their archetype paste in from their reader’s notebook to help them with this assignment. Students will need the draft at the start of class on Tuesday. We will work through a revision process and final drafts will be due on Wednesday 11/23.
There will be no additional “free write” homeowork this week, however students do have nightly reading homework.
Just a reminder that 3 nights of writing homework are due at the start of class on Friday 11/18.
Reading homework is the same .
While these two items do not usually go together, however they are things we felt were important to communicate before the holidays.
- We would love for all students to be able to have an opportunity to try our class ereaders (nooks), however we do need a signed ereader use policy for students to do so. We currently have about 40% of the forms returned. If you would like your child to have access to a class Ereader, please sign and return the form. If you need to print out another copy, here is the link.
- It’s that time of year when colds abound. If you are able to donate a box of tissues to our classroom, we would greatly appreciate it.
Today in Social Studies, students began working in pairs or small groups to create their own 3D maps depicting a state or region in the US. This is an in class assignment that willcontinue through Friday 11/18. Today, students worked with their partner/group to decide on a state/region and began drawing their maps. Tomorrow students will work to make their maps 3-D as well as create a map title and labels. On Friday students will paint and finish their maps.
In Language Arts, we will continue to look at archetypes trhough Friday. Students are identifying archetypes through the original Star Wars, a New Hope movie. Today students chose one character to follow and take notes on through the remainder of the movie (story), which is practice for what we are also asking them to do with their independent reading novels. On Friday, students will complete an in class writing assignment about the character they followed, using their notes. See preivious post for specific archetypes.
For tonight’s writing homework, students should write 1 page on the topic of their choosing. Students can try to add an archetypical character to their writing. See previous post for examples. Students also have nightly reading.
Today in Social Studies, students looked at a variety of maps and worked to develop a list of common characteristics. The list included:
- Map Title
- Key
- Scale
- Color
- Compass Rose
- Labels
Tomorrow, students will begin working in pairs to create their own 3D maps. This will be an in class assignment.
In Language Arts, we began to look at archetypes. The archetypes we are currently studying are:
- The Hero
- The Dark-Hero
- The Damsel In Distress
- The Sage/Mentor
- The Villain/Anti-Hero
- The “Fool”/Comic Relief
For tonight’s writing homework, students should write 1 page on the topic of their choosing. However, they should clearly identify one of the archetypes in their writing. For example, if they helped their team win a game, they could cast themselves as the Hero/Heroine of the game. They could write about a music teacher, family member, coach, etc. in the role of Sage/Mentor. Students can also write a fictional short story focusing on one of the archetypes.
Specific Descriptions of Archetypes
Students also have nightly reading.
