Sample Homework Paragraph

You can use this paragraph as an example of what we are expecting for your homework this week.

Author Choice

In the book, Wildwood, by Colin Meloy, the author chooses to use coyotes as the animals that make up a rebel army. On page 52 Meloy writes, “From the distance it was difficult to make out details, but the figures were definitely coyotes: They were covered in matted gray fur and their haunches were thin.” The coyotes turn out to be wearing matching red military uniforms. I think that coyotes are used as soldiers because coyotes travel in packs and make their living scavenging from humans and other animals. This makes them dependant on some animals and looked down on by humans; perfect conditions for rebellion. At the same time their consistent appearance and pack behavior give them some of the characteristics of soldiers. This makes coyotes a perfect animal to fill the roll of soldiers.

Welcome Back

In LA this week we will be working on analyzing the choices that authors make. Students will work in class to identify specific choices made by authors in the books they are currently reading and write about these choices in their nightly homework. Homework this week will be:

  • Tuesday – Explain why you think the author made the choice that you identified in class today. Make sure to make a claims, introduce evidence and explain your evidence!
  • Wednesday – Explain why you think the author chose to have characters interact with the setting in the way that you identified in class. Make sure to make a claim, introduce and explain evidence.
  • Thursday – Explain why you think the author chose to have characters interact eachother in the way that you identified in class. Make sure to make a claim, introduce and explain evidence.

On Friday students will choose one of these pieces of writing to develop into an in class literary essay.  Students are also still expected to be reading 30 minutes per night!
