Language Arts

Purpose: Students will generate a small moment idea by remembering their spring break experiences in order to practice sustained writing time.

  • Reminder of small moment techniques
  • Reminder of generating strategies
  • Writing time

Purpose: Students will find and sticky “sentences that sing” by reading their self-selected books and looking for great sounding sentences and good use of imagery in order to begin collecting poetic devices.

  • Great sounds include repeated consonant and vowel sounds, rhyme, and rhythm in prose writing.
  • Great imagery is sentences that pop vivid mental images for the reader or otherwise make unexpected connections.

Due:  Reading Records that show evidence of daily reading.

Students are working on the Dig Deep CBA

Purpose: Students can use primary sources to support a position by:

  • following mini-lesson modeling on writing an explanation
  • crafting a first explanation
  • focusing research on primary sources
  • Reviewing the CBA rubric

and, for Friday:

  • adding annotations about a secondary source, evaluating the source’s usefulness.

Due: Final CBA on 4/13 at the end of class

  • Group by broad topic in order to share text materials

Purpose: Students can finalize their topic approval, begin pre-searching, and narrow their topic to a time period in order to develop a research question and possibly find a first primary source.

  • Topic approval from teacher
  • Read in Peeps, History Alive, or World Book On-line
  • Narrow topic down and draft a research question
  • Research and take notes: background information and first primary source.

Language Arts

Purpose: Students can complete the theme long write in order to show evidence of thoughtful reading.

  • Model the theme paragraph
  • Writing time

Purpose: Students will demonstrate spelling competence by completing a spelling test in order to show progress towards improved skill levels.

  • Spelling test

Due:  Reading Records that show evidence of daily reading and nightly spelling homework.

Eastern Hemisphere:

Purpose: Students can begin selecting topics by watching a slide show and reviewing the next two assignments in order to gain an understanding the timeline and expectations for the CBA and EH Museum.

 

Due: CBA on April 13th, EH Museum on May 16th.

Purpose: Students will become more aware of relational bullying by watching “Finding Kind” and participating in a classroom discussion in order to practice supportive discussion skills.

  • All students report to homerooms

  • Assembly, film: 9:55-11:20
  • Lunch: 11:20-11:50
  • Homeroom, discussion: 11:55-12:20
  • Early dismissal: 12:20

Purpose: Students will craft a position statement by reframing their research question in the form of an answer that states a position in order to have an argument to support with collected evidence.

Language Arts

Purpose: Students will organize their evidence by reviewing notes and organizing them into a coherent plan in order to prove their position statement in a written essay.
