For the first assignment of the year, students must bring home the syllabus and share with their parent or guardian, then return it to class with a signature on Friday, September 11.
There are two versions of the syllabus:
The first day of school for 6th graders is Wednesday, September 9, 2009. This is our traditional “Stepping Up to Success” day, and 6th graders will have the entire school to themselves before the 7th and 8th graders show up later in the afternoon. Students and families should report to the auditorium at 8:05am for a brief welcome.
To help students with back to school shopping, our principal has posted the school supply list on the Eckstein home page. On team 6B, we will use composition notebooks in language arts and math. The 1 1/2″ 3-ring binder will be used in social studies. We will show students how to set up the dividers in class during the first week of school.
It is rare I make television recommendations, but there are two programs on tonight that could prove to be very educational.
First, at 6pm (PST) will be the first debate for the 2008 presidential election. There was talk that John McCain would not participate in the debate in order to focus on the proposed financial bailout plan, but he recently announced that he will participate. Most television stations will be broadcasting the debate.
Second, at 8pm (PST), a pilot for a new show will air on the History Channel that I’m very excited about. It is titled History Hacker and it is hosted by former Eckstein teacher Bre Pettis. On this show, Bre recreates inventions and historical discoveries. The pilot focuses on electricity and appears to have both history and science connections. You can view a trailer for History Hacker at Bre’s web site.
We will be using this web site throughout the year to support learning in room 208. We are choosing to use this web site instead of the class pages on the source because WordPress is considerably more flexible and user-friendly. However, we will continue to publish assignments and grades to the Source on a weekly basis. Students and parents can logon to the Source at http://source.seattleschools.org.
