What Killed Otzi the Iceman?

Otzi the IcemanWe have been studying the life and death of Otzi the Iceman, who was found frozen in a glacier by two hikers in 1991. Otzi lived around 5,300 years ago, and the artifacts found with him offer a rare look at life during the transition from the Stone Age to the Bronze Age.

First, we are watching a PBS documentary that came out soon after the discovery in 1991. Although somewhat dated, the video includes great footage of the excavation of the body from the ice, as well as detailed descriptions of the artifacts found with the body. The video ends by speculating that the Iceman died from hypothermia.

We will next read an article posted in the Seattle Times in 2001 about the discovery of a flint arrowhead in his ribcage that most likely led to his death. To help students understand the article, we will will used a keyword note-taking strategy.
